With the ongoing passion for everything green many companies have decided that going the fair trade route is probably a fair and just way to help save the world and its resources. Handmade bags and leather journals are just two of the products that are becoming very popular in first world countries.

For most of the people living in third world countries, life is a battle for most to survive. Many, living on less than one dollar a day, find it extremely difficult to keep themselves and family alive. These families tend to be large since they usually have no birth control available, or it is too expensive, and the outcome is many children and low income. This is a kind of self sustaining poverty trap that is extremely difficult to get out of.

But the first world countries are now realizing that something has to be done, not only for the sake of the population, but also for the world in general. For too long countries have been using up valuable resources without thinking about the consequences and it is only now when weather patterns are changing they can see that problems are coming. Trees are being burned at alarming rates to make way for roads or human habitation. Because of this wanton destruction drought is a very real possibility for people even in the first world countries.

So what is the world doing about these horrendous problems? Well, many are coming to realize that the world is literally in their hands and must do something. Plastic is being shunned and discarded and with this in mind, natural totes are becoming very fashionable. Not only do they save money and energy, they happen to look very fashion forward as well.

Even diaries and notebooks are being made from unusual materials which claim to have tree free pages. Yes, tree free pages which are made from recycled cotton cast offs. Whoever would have imagined that books would be made of cotton and become a bit of a phenomenon? Any covers or bindings for these books made from skins are sourced from cruelty free outlets so the product is absolutely green.

Because so many use up resources without even thinking, some have decided that any gift that they give must come from sustainable resources. It would seem then that the materials used in making gifts is now becoming very important. If everyone who was buying gifts in this one year alone replaced just one of those gifts with something green it would have such a huge effect on the world at large. Resources would be saved; someone in a third world country would be able to survive, and the item would probably be made of something that was recycled.
